Property of the Week

Hautes Pyrénées - Property in France

This stunning region with a greatly varied geography and climate stretches from the wine region in the north and the town of Madiran to Lannemezan at its extreme east, down to the Ski and Spa town of Cauterets near the Spanish border in the south and over to Lourdes in the west.

The region hosts numerous ski resorts (a great reason to buy a property in France), the largest of which is Bareges-La-Mongie with over 60 runs and about as many lifts. There are many Spa towns like the pretty and bustling town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre where people visit from around the world for rest and recuperation. The capital of the region is Tarbes, famous (at least in the Hautes-Pyrénées!) as the birth place of Marechal Foch. The town hosts an enormous market every Thursday and Saturday where you can pick up anything from a goose to a bed.

The Hautes-Pyrénées, lies to the south west of the Midi-Pyrénées and is home to a substantial portion of the Parc National Des Pyrénées, which stretches 100km along the French and Spanish border. Among its many mountains and streams, the park protects a vast array of flora and fauna. Wildlife abounds throughout the whole region, wild boar, deer, marmots and many birds of prey are daily sights. Families of Koipu (which look a bit like Guinea Pigs on steroids) can frequently be seen in the fields chomping on the maize stubble (I'm told they make excellent eating but my passion for new culinary delights extends only so far!)

Property in France varies greatly by region and indeed within very short distances as seen clearly within the Hautes-Pyrénées. Farmhouses of clay and river stone with red tiled roofs are abundant in the middle and north of the region with the architecture changing to stone and slate as you travel south into the foothills, and of course mountain chalets and barns ready for conversion throughout the slopes of the Pyrénées.

The region is well known for its year round outdoor activities including obviously, skiing and snowboarding, paragliding, rafting and hiking to name but a few. But there are many other less strenuous activities to partake of including fishing, horse riding and cycling (another good reason for buying property in South West France) is immensely popular here.

Toulouse, Biarritz and Pau airports are all within easy reach, Pau being only 30 minutes from Tarbes whilst Biarritz and Toulouse are each around 1hour 30 minutes. Lourdes offers the closest arrival point with charter flights. A bit further a field but worth considering are Carcassonne 2hours, Bordeaux and Bilbao under 3hours, with Bergerac and Rodez around 3hours 45.
